What is the Heart – Beyond a Physical Organ?
What is the heart, apart from being the organ that pumps life-giving blood throughout your entire body?
The heart is the deep core of our being. It is the seat of wisdom, the source of love, compassion, and joy. It is also where our courage and resilience reside.
The Science behind the Heart’s Capacity
In 1991, scientists discovered a neural network within the human heart – an astonishing finding that gave birth to a new branch of medicine known as neurocardiology. The heart is now often called our second brain, as it has its own memory independent of the cranial brain. This becomes especially evident in cases of heart transplants, where recipients are sometimes remembering experiences that were never their own, as well as acquiring new tastes and inclinations, seemingly stemming from the donor.
Gregg Braden reminds us that “the heart feels, remembers, thinks, and senses independently of the brain” and that “the brain receives many of its instructions from the heart!” This is the powerful role the heart is playing in our lives, and rightly so, as “it is the first organ that develops in our bodies when we are in our mother’s womb”.
The Emotional Vulnerability of the Heart
Yet, because the heart feels so deeply – both high and low emotional vibrations – it is also vulnerable. Throughout history, we’ve heard of broken hearts, which can indeed lead to physical illness or even death. This is why our subconscious mind is wired to protect the heart. As soon as it perceives emotional danger to the heart, it creates a protective barrier around it. This barrier is not made of physical tissue, but of energy. More precisely, it uses trapped emotions that are residing in our body and energy field, and it layers these around the heart. This is how we acquire a heart-wall, which never goes away again by itself when it is no longer required. But it tends to create negative side effects, ie. emotional numbness, disconnection and more.
Healing the Heart
This is why it is so important to release the heart-wall, and heal our hearts from the painful memories and feelings we have acquired during our lives of many ups and downs.
For a deeper understanding of this process, look out for Dr. Bradley Nelson’s most recent publication, “The Heart Code”. His groundbreaking work sheds light on how we can reconnect with the intelligence and wisdom of the heart – and live from a place of wholeness and peace.
